Philosophy: A Refusal To Compromise
At Canning Downs we are committed to returning the property to its role of producing multiple Group winners from a small, quality group of broodmares which will provide strong drafts for the major select sales. Our broodmares have been selected on racing performance and/or superior depth of pedigree, and we won't veer from that strict criteria.
Our resources will be put into producing just 12-15 yearlings per year. By limiting our numbers, we feel we are able to produce a 'hand-made' product, carefully monitored and guided through the critical early stages of development which will have a higher than average chance of success as a racehorse. Each individual receives the personal attention of the Stud Manager who is a very experienced horseman, encouraging our small, capable team to pursue uncompromising standards.
Although our aim is to breed the majority of future broodmares, we have also purchased a number of yearlings which if successful on the racetrack will strengthen our broodmare band. For this purpose we purchased Only Words as a yearling filly at the 2002 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale. In just 13 starts she won six races including four Group races and recorded two Gr1 placings. She competed against and defeated some of the season's best performers Ikes' Dream and Shamekha (Surround Stakes) and Alinghi (TJ Smith Stakes). Only Words was forced into retirement as a 4YO as a result of an injury. Another stakes winner to be retired with Only Words was Royal Mask who was bred from the colonial C24 family of Beatrice which has proved successful over many generations for the stud.
This family has also produced Masked Assassin, a half-brother to Royal Mask, in which we retained a significant share. Masked Assassin won four races from 1,000 to 1,600m including QTC Sires' Produce S. [G2], MRC Victoria H. [G3], VRC Gibson Carmichael S. [L]. and placed 2nd in the MRC Sandown Guineas [G2] and 3rd QTC T.J. Smith S. [G1]
